ADJETIVOS ANTES Y DESPUÉS DEL NOMBRE

LOS ADJETIVOS ANTES Y DETRÁS DEL NOMBRE

Adjective before and after nouns

REGLA 1

Adjectives which always go after nouns are the following:

(Los adjetivos que siempre van detrás del nombre son los siguientes):

Colour (color), shape (forma), state (estado), origin (procedencia) and type (tipo).

Let’s see some examples: (Veamos algunos ejemplos):

Colour adjectives (Adjetivos de color)

Español    Inglés
La casa azul   The blue house

It is a mistake to say: “La azul casa” in Spanish. (Es un error decir: “la azul casa” en español)

Shape adjectives (Adjetivos de forma)

Español      Inglés
La mesa redonda    The round table

State or status adjectives (Adjetivos de estado)

Español     inglés
El coche viejo     The old car

Origin adjectives (Adjetivos de procedencia)

Español     Inglés
La chica francesa     The French girl

Type adjectives (Adjetivos de tipo)

Español    Inglés
El papel manila   The manila paper

However, in poetic language, all these adjectives can go before nouns.

Sin embargo, en el lenguaje poético, todos estos adjetivos pueden ir antes del sustantivo o nombre .

Example: (Ejemplo):

Sus achinados ojos y sus largos cabellos me enamoraron. Su tierna mirada y sus rojos labios me enloquecieron.

(Her slanted eyes and long hair made me fall in love. Her tender glance and red lips made me crazy).

RULE 2 (REGLA 2)

Generally, adjectives which express order go before nouns.

(Generalmente, los adjetivos que expresan orden van antes del sustantivo o nombre).

(Next or coming (próximo), next or following (siguiente), first (primero), second (segundo), new (nuevo), former (antiguo), last último, etc)

See you next weekend. Nos vemos el próximo fin de semana.

You hardly ever hear a native speaker saying: “Nos vemos el fin de semana próximo”.  However, it is correct.

(Pocas veces se escucha a un nativo decir: “Nos vemos el fin de semana próximo”.  Sin embargo, es correcto).

Let’s see more examples: (Veamos más ejemplos):

Order adjective “SIGUIENTE” (Adjetivo de orden SIGUIENTE)

Español    Inglés
Que pase el siguiente paciente.   Next patient, please.

“Siguiente” can also be used after nouns when we talk about past actions.

(Siguiente también se puede usar después del sustantivo cuando hablamos de acciones pasadas).

Pedro me dijo que fue a la playa el día siguiente (el siguiente día).

(Pedro told me that he went to the beach the next day (the following day))

In these sentences, both positions of the adjective are right.

En esta oración ambas posiciones del adjetivo son correctas.

Order adjectives “la semana que viene” and “la semana siguiente” (Adjetivos de orden “la semana que viene” y “la semana siguiente”)

EspañolInglés
Ayer, Pedro me dijo que iba al teatro la  semana que viene.Yesterday, Peter told me he was going to the theatre next week.
Ese día, Pedro me dijo que iba al teatro la semana siguiente. That day, Peter told he was going to the theatre the following week.

The two sentences above are in past tense, but the first one indicates that Peter hasn’t gone to the theatre yet and he plans to go next week. The second one indicates that Peter planned to go to the theatre the week after he said those words.

(Las dos frases anteriores están en pasado, pero la primera indica que Pedro aún no ha ido al teatro y que piensa ir la semana que viene. La segunda indica que Pedro planeó ir al teatro una semana después de afirmarlo) .

Adjective of order PASADO MAÑANA (Adjetivo de orden PASADO MAÑANA)

Español     Inglés
Nos vemos pasado mañana    See you the day after tomorrow

Es incorrecto decir: “Nos vemos mañana pasado”. Es decir, este adjetivo se usa solamente antes del adverbio mañana.

It is wrong to say: “Nos vemos mañana pasado”. That’s to say, this adjective is placed just before the adverb “mañana”.

Sin embargo, pasado se puede usar detrás de sustantivos. Por ejemplo: El año pasado fui a Brasil.

Nevertheless, pasado can be used after nouns. For example: El año pasado fui a Brasil. (Last year I went to Brazil)

El domingo pasado fui al acuario (Last Sunday I went to the aquarium)

Adjective of order “antiguo” (Adjetivo de orden antiguo)

Español      Inglés
Mi antiguo jefe es divertido     My former boss is fun

In this sentence, antiguo doesn’t refer to an outdated person or time. It refers to something that happened before (first) and now no longer exists. Therefore, “ANTIGUO” is an adjective of order.

(En esta oración ANTIGUO no se refiere a una persona o tiempo anticuado. Se refiere a algo que ocurrió antes (primero) pero que ahora ya no existe. Por eso, en este caso, “antiguo” es un adjetivo de orden).

You can also use ANTIGUO after a noun. (También puedes usar ANTIGUO después de un sustantivo).

For example: (por ejemplo):

If you say edificio antiguo, it means that there is a new building, and you mean an outdated and old-fashioned one.Si tú dices el edificio antiguo, quiere decir que hay un edificio nuevo, y tú te refieres a uno anticuado y pasado de moda.

REGLA 3

Algunos adjetivos pueden ir delante o detrás del nombre pero cambian el significado.

Some adjectives can go before or after the noun, but the meaning changes.

Por ejemplo: for example:

No es lo mismo decir mi amigo bueno y mi buen amigo.

It is not the same to say “mi amigo bueno” y “mi buen amigo”.

Mi amigo bueno (I have two friends, one is a good one and the other one is a bad one).

Mi buen amigo (He is an excellent person)

Con esto quiero decir que cuando el adjetivo “bueno” va antes del nombre se transforma en “buen” y destaca la cualidad de esa persona.

By this I mean that when the adjective “bueno” goes before a name, it becomes “buen” and highlights the quality of this person.

Cuando el adjetivo “bueno” va después del nombre, se distingue entre uno bueno y otro malo.

When the adjective “bueno” goes after the noun, it distinguishes between one good one and one bad one.

Lo mismo ocurre con el adjetivo PRIMERO, cuando va antes del nombre se dice “PRIMER''.

The same situation is observed in PRIMERO, when it goes before the noun, “PRIMER” is used.

Example: Ejemplo:

Mi primer trabajo era de chofer (My first job was as a driver)

Este es tu trabajo primero. (No suena natural)
Generalmente usamos “primero o primera”  de forma sustantivada.

Este es tu trabajo primero,
This doesn’t sound natural because we generally use “primero” o “primera” as a noun form.

Example:

Este es el primero que tienes que hacer.

This is the first one you have to do.

Veamos otro ejemplo:

DISTINGUE / DISTINGUISH

EspañolInglés
Voy por la calle pequeña, porque la calle grande está atascada.
I am going to take the small street because the large street is jammed.

DESTACA CUALIDAD

EspañolInglés
El pequeño camino nos lleva a la montaña.The small path takes us to the mountain.

En este ejemplo; hay solo un camino, y es pequeño, por esa razón, el adjetivo va antes. Aquí solo destaca y no distingue.

In this example, there is just one path and it is small, for that reason, the adjective goes before. Here, it only emphasises this quality and does not distinguish.

Espero que esta información te haya sido útil (I hope this information has been useful for you).
